There are a lot of handsfree handkits available these days, but sometimes we just need something that’s simple, and works. The Jabra SP5050 bluetooth handsfree carkit is just is. It may not have all of the features such as noise cancellation or FM transmission like a few other kits, but it is slim, easy to use, and built with quality in mind.

The design is thin, black, and sleek, and easily attaches onto your sun visor. You can have the LED status indicators on or off and it uses one multifunction button to turn on and off the unit, answer and end or reject calls, and two side buttons for the volume.

The Jabra SP5050 doesn’t use a common charger port so you are required to use the one provided with the unit. The annoyance is that it only comes with a car charger, and the unit can’t be used while being charged. With no AC charger for you to use when not in the car means this unit doesn’t always have up time. Charging isn’t quick either, but it isn’t long. However, when it’s up, it’s up, and if gives you a very generous 10+ hours talk time and 200+ standby time.

Pairing is easy and the unit has a power save feature where it goes into stand by to conserve battery power. Without fret, it instantly turns back on to use as soon as a call comes in.

Quality wise, the speaker is a little soft, even on the loudest volume. When you don’t have too much noise, the SP5050 works fine, but when you have music out too loud or windows down with air gushing in; it can make the person hard to hear a little.
The poor noise cancellation is also a slight problem. The high sensitivity microphone works well but will still pick up too much background noise. So if you speak clearly and loudly, the other person can still hear you without too much trouble, but for a normal conversation, it’s best to avoid too much background noise. The quality however is very clear and a bonus when used in the right conditions.

Like any other car kit, the SP5050 can be used in office also if you are having a business call meeting. Thanks to the design, it looks good anywhere you use it. The sensitive microphone makes it great in the conference as it will be able to pick up voices more easily, and the speaker, in good conditions, works very well.

All in all, for a cheap and effective car kit, you can’t go wrong with the Jabra SP5050. If you’re looking for more features however, you may want to look at others out there.
