Raft Race
Mini Olympics
All Pages

On Saturday, the youth of the church stake had a raft race and later in the evening, Footscray 1st Ward had their own mini Olympics.

The teams competing in the raft were Ballarat, Footscray, Geelong, Point Cook, and Werribee.

The teams competing in the Olympics were Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow.

We all gathered at the Portarlington Beach and assembled the rafts. Some, like our ward, had it already assembled, but we check the bolts to make sure everything was tight, just so that we would be doing something.

Because Ballarat only had one person show up, they combined with the Werribee team. The Geelong boys and girls wanted to race their own rafts so they came as two teams; the girls arrived late but had their raft pre-assembled.
The Geelong boys added bikes connected to propellers to push them, but the waves unfortunately washed the chains off the gears rendering the bikes useless. Luckily they brought some awes with them.

We tested out rafts, lined up, and the race began.

Race Start

The Geelong Girls had a couple of them running along the ground rather than rafting. As the rest of the teams caught on, it became a game of steady paddling, and strong pushing and hauling.

Foot Work

We started last as we were pushed back but caught up to second just before the finish. The Geelong Boys who were now third sent out a paddler to attack one of our crew. He was intercepted by Leverage and we continued the race to finish second with the Geelong Girls first.

Finish Line

I personally declare that all teams are disqualified due to non-paddling, but because we need to come out with a winner, I would say Footscray because they paddled from last to third in a matter of seconds. If this was a fair paddling race, we would have won.

Footscray Ward

Approximately 30 people came to the mini Olympics and set into 4 teams. Craig had written an anthem for each team which were parodies of old cheer songs.

It was all the usual games you would have at school but it was good fun with lots of laughs.

We had blowing balloons across to the finish line, 3 legged race, egg and spoon, a quiz game, 4x4 medley (our version), wheel borrow race, over and under, and I've forgotten some of them.

After each win, we would go up to the podium for the presentations of the medals and have the anthem of the winning team sung.
